Falsettos

(First Black Whizzer)

Rep Stage, Howard Community College's (HCC) professional regional theatre, presents "Falsettos" with music and lyrics by William Finn and book by William Finn & James Lapine. The production is directed and choreographed by Rep Stage Producing Artistic Director Joseph W. Ritsch, with musical direction by Tiffany Underwood Holmes. William Finn and James Lapine's groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical "Falsettos" revolves around the life of a charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, his lover, about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the lesbians next door. It's a hilarious, achingly poignant, and utterly unique look at the infinite possibilities that make up a modern family, a beautiful reminder that love can tell a million stories, and how we all learn to grow up and face the future with love and dignity.

The Play That Goes Wrong

(Trevor)

When backstage antics go wrong – sometimes it might be best if the “Show didn’t go on.” This 1920s who-dunnit has everything you never wanted in a show–an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines). Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences! Part slapstick farce, part Sherlock Holmes, guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter!

For Colored Boyz…

(Man In Red)

FOR COLORED BOYZ is a powerful and poignant show. It will get you talking and get you thinking. It will stay with you. The issues covered throughout the performance included slavery, Black identity, self-hatred, hyper-masculinity, the power of language, and challenges of stereotypes. The second act was focused largely on police brutality and the never-ending cycle of abuse caused by those in power. The inclusion of the memorial hoodies worn by the cast was chilling.

Ragtime

(Booker T. Washington)

Every so often, a play comes along that makes you realize that what you are witnessing is nothing less than a piece of theatrical history. These are the magical shows that define generations and speak to social constructs that strike at the core of the soul and the nation. Productions like this are few and far between, and, though rare, are the ones talked about for years to come." 27East

The Black Theatre Matters Bill

(Author/Organizer)

Over 500 people came together in solidarity to develop and actively advocate for The Black Theatre Matters Bill. This led to a series of over 100 resolutions designed to create a more equitable union for current and prospective members. This bill passed at the Actors' Equity Association's Inaugural Convention in 2021. The title of this bill highlights the time in which it was created; a time when National Injustice against Black lives intersected with the American theatre industry and its challenge of 'The Great White Way.' These interconnected resolutions were born from the community it was designed to aid. This offering is a major step towards a more equitable industry.

Actors’ Equity Association National Convention

(AEA Delegate/ Writer of the Black Theatre Matters Bill)

ACTORS' EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, is the U.S. labor union that represents more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers. Equity endeavors to advance the careers of its members by negotiating wages, improving working conditions and providing a wide range of benefits (health and pension included). The national labor union representing more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theatre, had concluded its first-ever convention, from April 25 to 27.

March on Broadway

(Speaker/Co-Organizer)

The April 22 event advocated for six industry demands set forth by theatre artists and activists. In the wake of allegations of abusive behavior perpetrated by producer Scott Rudin, hundreds of theatre artists and activists gathered in Manhattan April 22 for a “March on Broadway” to ensure proper accountability and transparency within the industry, while advocating for a safer work environment for marginalized communities upon theatre's reopening. The event, consisting of a rally in Columbus Circle and a subsequent march, brought voice and rallying cries to six demands organizers placed on Rudin, the Broadway League, and Actors’ Equity Association.

Actors’ Equity Association Governance

(AEA Delegate)

Members of Actors’ Equity, which represents more than 51,000 stage actors and managers, have approved a series of changes to Equity’s constitution designed “to build a modern national union,” including the creation of a national convention. The first convention will be held in early 2021 and will include 211 elected delegates from across the country “who can come together to share common challenges, agree on a way to move forward, and take up resolutions that help set policy for the union,”

“The final business meeting of convention ended with a walkout led by a significant number of our BIPOC delegates.” Said AEA President Kate Swindle in an Open Letter. “This walkout demonstrated clearly that our BIPOC members don't feel their concerns are taken as seriously as the concerns of other members. It will take a commitment from each and every one of us to root out the biases that lead to repeated situations like this. Although I am deeply saddened and sorry for any pain that was caused at the convention, this experience has presented a true opportunity to identify and interrupt this harmful pattern of behavior.”

Shindle goes on to say “Since our convention concluded, we have spent significant time consulting with professionals and colleagues about how to facilitate healing, increase the safety of our rooms and provide education and training to create a stronger, more inclusive, more welcoming union. Thank you for your patience as we did this work. As a next step, we have several additional trainings and discussions planned for delegates (and please note that I am using "delegate" to refer to both councilor and non-councilor delegates).”
